We care about the safety of our clients and staff. In the event of a fire emergency, we want everybody to know what to do.
5 minutes for drill, could be much longer if actual emergency
Complete “Emergency Drill Report” in Apricot.
If this is a REAL fire emergency, also notify your Program Coordinator and complete an Incident Report in Apricot.
When practicing a fire drill, first talk with your coworkers about what needs to be done, and how you will decide who does what. Keep in mind that you will each need to do more than one of the following tasks:
1. Use the pull station or fire alarm panel to trigger the alarm. Once the drill has started, reset the trigger to turn off the alarm. In the event of an actual fire, pull the fire alarm and call 911.
2. Direct clients outside and to the designated evacuation area, via the closest available exit:
3. Collect the client roster, a cell phone, van keys (in the event that you need to relocate clients to another site or further away), and immediately proceed to the designated evacuation area. Once all clients are present, do a roll call.
4. Sweep the inside of the building (including basement) to make sure all clients are aware of the fire drill and are able to leave. If someone is unable to evacuate under their own power, two staff could use the stretcher in the office to carry that person. If a person refuses to exit, leave them and continue to evacuate.
5. Sweep the outside of the building to make sure that all clients meet at the designated evacuation area.
6. Time the fire drill. Time starts when the fire alarm sounds, and ends when roll call is completed outside.
7. Complete the Emergency Drill Report on Apricot and log in daybook
** In case of an actual kitchen fire (or any fire), remember that there is baking soda in each kitchen that should be used first to put out the fire. If that does not work, or if the fire is very large, use the fire extinguisher, and send a maintenance request to Ted to have the extinguisher replaced.
NEVER use water to put out a grease fire! Water will feed the fire and create an uncontrollable situation!
Follow all instructions from your Program Coordinator and 911 if this is a real fire emergency.
