If you have ANY doubt about whether or not to fight a fire, EVACUATE AND CALL 911!
DO NOT use a Fire Extinguisher if:
- The fire is spreading
- The fire could block your exit
- You do not know how to use the fire extinguisher
DO use a Fire Extinguisher ONLY if:
- Everyone is out of the room and will be able to evacuate the building if necessary
- The fire is small and confined (like a wastebasket or stove top)
- You have a way out, and can fight the fire with your back to the exit
- You know how to use the extinguisher and know that it is in good working order
- You use careful judgment and know how to get out fast if your effort is failing
If you decide to use a Fire Extinguisher, use the PASS steps as a guide:
PASS – Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep
PULL: Pull the pin
AIM: Aim the extinguisher nozzle
SQUEEZE: Squeeze the handle
SWEEP: Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it goes out completely
