POLICY
Dawn Farm believes that nicotine is a harmful drug, and that tobacco use is a serious issue for individuals recovering from addictions. We also believe that people who use tobacco are less likely to maintain success in recovery, and that tobacco use is a part of the culture of addiction. Therefore, Dawn Farm discourages tobacco use on the part of clients and staff, and actively tries to support clients and staff who are interested in recovery from nicotine and/or tobacco.
- Currently, clients and staff are allowed to smoke in designated outdoor smoking areas, based on the rules provided by each program location.
- Tobacco use in any non-designated areas is subject to discharge/termination.
- Tobacco use is not allowed in any Dawn Farm vehicle, or any vehicle used to transport Dawn Farm clients.
- Clients with asthma, pregnant women, and others with specific medical contraindications may not be allowed to smoke, dependent upon direction from a physician.
- Michigan law states that one must be 18 or older to possess or use cigarettes. Therefore, minors will not be allowed to use tobacco or nicotine at Dawn Farm.
- Clients and staff who are interested in tobacco recovery will be supported by Dawn Farm.
- Clients may have the option of using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). However, if they begin to use tobacco again, they will be asked to pay back the cost of any supplies used.
- Neither Dawn Farm, its staff nor clients will sell tobacco products.
- Chewing tobacco, dip, and rolling tobacco are NOT allowed on Dawn Farm property.
- Dawn Farm staff will not smoke or use tobacco with clients. Staff are able to smoke in the designated smoking areas at each site, when no clients are present. Otherwise, staff are able to use tobacco in their automobiles, or off site.
Staff members who wish quit using tobacco can request any form of assistance (medication, hypnosis, acupuncture, nicotine replacement, etc.) paid for by Dawn Farm. After six months without use of tobacco products, staff will receive a bonus of $200. If staff begins to use tobacco again, they will be asked to pay back the cost of any assistance paid for by Dawn Farm, plus they will be asked to return the bonus.
