Hazardous Material Storage and Disposal

Dawn Farm strives to ensure that all potentially hazardous material is disposed of in a safe way, and that materials are recycled, whenever possible. The following are disposal procedures for items commonly used during normal Dawn Farm operations.

Broken Glass (including broken light bulbs):

Broken glass should never be touched with bare hands. Use a broom and dustpan to sweep up pieces of glass. Broken glass should be placed in a sealed cardboard box that is large enough to hold all pieces. Use a damp paper towel to gently blot/wipe the area and pick up any fine particles or shards. Once all of the glass (including the paper towel) is in the box, the box should be closed and sealed with packing tape, and placed in the trash.

Florescent/Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs:

Fluorescent Light Bulbs or Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) should be stored in the staff office at each Dawn Farm location. Bulbs that are burnt out but still intact should be taken to a recycling station. Recycling stations are located at the City of Ann Arbor Drop-Off Station, or the Washtenaw County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program. CFL can also be recycled at any Home Depot location.

Monitors/TVs:

Monitors, TVs, and similar items that are not usable should be stored in a basement storage area at the Farm and recycled during local “ewaste” events that happen periodically in the Ann Arbor area OR stored in the staff kitchen area for more immediate action, to donate to the Habitat for Humanity Restore 734-822-1530.

Toner Cartridges:

Empty toner and ink cartridges can be sent back to Applied Imaging for recycling. Applied Imaging will provide return boxes free of charge to send toner to them.

Batteries:

As of 2010, we can now dispose of alkaline batteries directly in the trash. Rechargeable and Lithium batteries can be recycled at the Drop Off Station for a $3.00 Entry fee.
