Goal - why is this important to us?
We care about the safety of our clients and staff. If there is a violent or threatening situation, staff should be prepared in how to address it.
Ingredients - what do I need to get started?
Timeframe - about how long will this take?
5 minutes for drill, could be longer if actual violent situation
Contacts - who do I need to let know?
Program Coordinator if behavior results in client discharge
Dawn Farm does not use seclusion, restraint, or any other means of physical confrontation as a response to violent or threatening behaviors.
Clients sign a document in each intake packet that states that any violent or threatening behavior is grounds for immediate discharge. In addition, a client with a history of violence may be asked to sign a Behavior Contract regarding violent or aggressive behavior. Any contract with a client should express clear concerns and consequences for violent, aggressive or intimidating behaviors. Any resident who is clearly violent or threatening must be discharged.
- The first priority is to protect the safety of all clients and staff involved. Avoid being alone with the client- a group of staff is preferable to one staff person
- Calmly ask the person to calm down or leave the property. If the person refuses, tell them you will be calling the police.
- If staff feel safe and comfortable, they may proceed with the discharge of client. If for any reason the staff are concerned about their safety or well being, they may call their Program Coordinator.
- If the person still does not de-escalate or leave, call 911. Inform the violent client that you have done so.
- Make sure that all staff and clients are safe until the police arrive to handle the situation.
- Complete the Emergency Drill Report on Apricot and log in daybook
- In the event of an actual emergency, complete an Incident Report as well.
Remember to follow all of these steps in the event of an ACTUAL medical emergency
Follow-up - what loose ends do I need to wrap up?
Follow all instructions from your Program Coordinator and 911 if this is an actual emergency.
