Dawn Farm Spera Recovery Center exists to assist addicts and alcoholics in taking the first steps towards sobriety and developing foundations for sustained recovery. Spera provides a safe, recovery-focused atmosphere for social detox and short term residential services.
We believe that addiction is a treatable disease, a symptom of which is drug and alcohol use. Our approach includes a strong emphasis on the group process, DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) and the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. We believe in the value and dignity of each client and in their capacity to develop a lifestyle of honesty and recovery.
Dawn Farm prides itself in treating traditionally under-served populations, including IV drug users, women, low socio-economic status, and minorities.
Dawn Farm Spera Recovery Center serves people over the age 17, (parental consent is needed when client is 17 years of age) who struggle with addiction.
We admit people without regard to their nationality, race, religion, marital status, sexual preference or political belief. We will admit clients who require maintenance on psychotropic medication, as long as they are stabilized on such medications and are able to function without disrupting the treatment of other clients. Clients who have been discharged are eligible for readmission after a period of time determined by the treatment team. Clients discharged for rule violations may need to be discussed by the treatment team prior to readmission.
Clients are initially screened during pre-screen, using a triage process developed by our medical staff. Clients who may be in medical danger are sent to the U of M Emergency Room by taxi or an ambulance. They must receive medical clearance before being admitted. Client who are pregnant will always require clearance from Medical Director and Supervisor before admitted.
Clients are treated on a first come/first serve basis. (See: Procedure for Waitlist – Spera)
Spera can accommodate 18 clients at any given time, made up of various combinations of detox and short term residential clients.
Dawn Farm Spera Recovery Center is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and a staff member can be reached by calling (734) 669-8265.
Please see the Program Evaluation system for a complete description of measurable goals, objectives and outcomes. These measures are consistent with our philosophy as stated above.
Assessment- When a client arrives, we assess overall health and medical risks, identify the client’s problem areas, strengths, needs, and resources.
Treatment- Spera Counselors oversee withdrawal, facilitate multiple daily groups, and begin collaborative planning for the next step in recovery. We educate clients about addiction and recovery, explore goals and options, and impart hope that recovery is possible.
Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) services – Recovery Support Specialists (RSS) provide blended peer support and low intensity case management. These specialists are direct links to indigenous community resources. Spera groups are also open to the community, and members of the recovery community are encouraged to join.
Mutual Aid Groups- Spera values and emphasizes 12-step recovery. Our local recovery community is enthusiastic and diverse, and clients are encouraged to develop a 12-step based support system.
Special populations- Dawn Farm strives to meet the needs of special populations. These groups include, but are not limited to the following.
Through seminars, training, consultations and discussion among the staff, we continually hone our skills in working for marganilized populations.
Clients with HIV are referred for both support and medical care and, of course, universal precautions are observed at all times.
Clients confined to wheelchairs cannot currently be accommodated at our Spera facility, but will be assisted with referrals for alternative services.
For clients with medical problems (asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.) we offer medical assessments and referrals.
The team approach is integral to treatment at Dawn Farm. Decisions relating to the Spera Recovery Center are made after consulting with at least one other staff member. The team approach is also supported by use of the Daybook, which facilitates communication between shifts, and by detailed contact notes written throughout the day/evening/overnight shifts in each client’s file.
